Are you really living in the present? I know that I struggle with it.
I spend a lot of time thinking about the past. Things I could have done differently. Things I could have changed.
I spend even more time thinking about the future. It tends to be one of my favorite pastimes.
I think about the far distant future. Like about where I want to be. How my life will be different in a little while.
I think about the near distant future too. How conversations will go when I have them in a couple of weeks. How I'm going to handle situations that I believe are going to be coming up soon.
It's fine to plan for the future.
It's fine to look back and see where you've come from.
The problem is when you lose sight of today.
Today is what's important. It's the todays that make up your life. If you spend too much time looking at the past and future, you'll miss today entirely.
My sponsor used to say to me, "If you've got one foot in tomorrow and one foot in yesterday, you're pissing all over today."
When I catch myself caught up in the past and caught up in the future, I try to remind myself of that.
And I try to bring myself back to today.
To my life.
To my family.
To my self.
Just Keep Coming Back
